Arthur Sullivan (Composer) was born in London in 1842 and died in the same city in 1900. His musical works included hymns, oratorios, ballads, a symphony and, most notably, 22 operas, 14 of them to words by W.S. Gilbert, from Thespis in 1871 to The Grand Duke in 1896. Also a noted conductor, he is credited with reviving England's interest in Schumann's music, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and the cantatas of Bach, as well as being among the early champions of such musicians as Edward Elgar and C.V. Stanford.
